If you take an exam in India - Part 2

Here are only some of many examples of interesting practice questions from the study material provided by ICAI (The Institue of Chartered Accountant of India) for CPT exam. They tell me "Pick up the correct answer". ICAI you are FUNNNNNY! ;o) And the question is (go ahead, try solving it):

"The age of a person is twice the sum of the ages of his two sons and five years ago his age was twice the sum of their ages. Find his present age.

a) 60 years b) 52 years c) 51 years d) 50 years
"

If you wonder, the correct answer, according to the textbook, is "d". And I thought, THEY WERE ALL DEAD!

Another good one:

"Find the fraction which is equal to 1/2 when both its numerator and denominator are increased by 2. It is equal to 3/4 when both are increased by 12.

a) 3/8 b) 5/8 c) 3/8 d) 2/3
"

They say that the correct answer is "a", but I thought it was "c" ;o) Would I get -0.25 point if I chose "c"? There is a -0.25 point penalty for incorrect answer AND "Multiple darkened circles for a question will be treated as wrong answer" - now this is just mean :o/

Point #22 from the instructions for the test sent by ICAI:

"For any inadvertent printing mistake or framing of the question, he should write to the Additional Secretary (Exams), ICAI within a week of the date of CTP examination."

First of all, I should report you for unequal treatment of genders and secondly, don't you think I will be too busy figuring out what you are trying to ask me in each question and solving it in just over a minute to check if your freaking questions and answers make sense... Do your own work!

And these kind of questions are my all time favourites:

"A promise is defined in section

a) 2(b)
b) 2(e)
c) 2(d)
d) 2(h)
"

OR

"In April 2007, Bank rate was_______percent

a) 6
b) 7
c) 5
d) 8
"

Would you also like to know what it was in May and June? No problem at all, I feel blessed at this divine opportunity to extend you every courtesy by elightening you with this knowledge which I will pray is to your liking and eternal satisfaction failing which I will supplicate myself at your feet and beg forgiveness for I am but a humble servant waiting at your beck and call to ensure that your every need and desire is fulfilled.... Oh my god, you can't be serious!! These questions are related to an accounting exam?! What kind of accountants is India producing? I studied accounting in Australia and NONE of the questions were like this. Not only do they give ridiculous and irrelevant questions here, they take marks off you if you get them wrong too! Aaaah, India. Paagal duniya.

Jurate that age question is very common one in India and we use to solve them in our 10th grade..sorry..but can you re-type the question again..because your question that mans age is twice sum of his s0n's ages and was also twice the sum of his sons ages five years ago seems incorrect..please can you re-type it, i am trying to solve!

ok i solved the fraction, i dont know if this is correct:
let the fraction be x/y;
x+2/y+2=1/2- condition 1
x+12/y+12=3/4- condition 2
so from 1 you can infer 2x+4=y+2 or 2x-y=-2 - A
and from 2 you can infer 4x-3y=-12- B
so from A and B you can easily find y=8
Put value of y in 1 and you get x=3
Thus fraction=3/8

Vikrant - I typed the question as it appeared in the textbook. My whole point was that there was a mistake in the question as there are MANY MANY MANY more mistakes in questions and answers and even some definitions. It gets very frustrating when you are trying to study. The type of the problem is, of course, very easy and of a high school level! That's why I chose it for an example as the mistake is so obvious :o)

Anonymous - you didn't get my point ;o) The point is that answers "a" and "c" are identical and yes, they both are correct and no, you cannot select them both ;o) Again, I didn't make a mistake in retyping, that's how it appeared in the textbook.

Sharell - those two math questions are only from the first chapter of the study material and not examples of actual test questions. It's only that these textbooks are so full of errors all over that it makes me wonder what the test will be like :o)

Now, the last two questions are the kind of questions that can appear in the test and I find them useless. Judging from the practice test I looked at, ~10% of questions were of that kind.

Btw this is only CPT - Common Proficiency Test (the first level) that tests the basic knowledge in accounting, economics, match and mercantile law. There are two more exams after that and 3.5 yrs of articles in between.

Aaah.. this is really funny!
I have been telling people in DK, that I had a feeling the Indian kids are getting a better education than our kids in Denmark.
I might just have to reconsider that :-)
Thanks for sharing !

Trine - I'm not sure if that's a better education system or kids having more motivation/pressure from parents. And then again, what percentage of kids are we talking about.

i dont know why u find it hilarious.i mean these r some really basic questions which i feel any good seventh standard guy can solve.do u know that the jee(joint entrance examination) for entry into iit's is the toughest engineering entrace exam in the world.i have solved some previous mit entrance test papers n find that they r absolutely easy n based on sime concepts.but, iit is a very complex n strain-causing prestigios exam.in india it's like they test ur brains before they test ur concepts.i hope that is only for CPT,the first satge exam which is quite easy.thank u.

Uhh. Mistakes in Indian entrance exams are common. Last year I took the IIT-JEE, which is supposed to be the MOST prestigious exam in the world; and there too, they managed to come up with a 99 mark glitch. Lulz.
